The Community should also strengthen national and regional capacities to counter terrorism and other trans-national crimes, and ensure that the Southeast Asian region remains free of all weapons of mass destruction. To establish modalities for the Community, the ASEAN leaders agreed that Indonesia would develop a Plan of Action for the ASEAN Security Community. Hints of what was to come appeared as far back as the aftermath of the Watergate Scandal at a congressional hearing in 1975 led by Senator Frank Church – one of the people marked for attention under the MINARET Project. The hearing revealed that the NSA, in collaboration with its UK-based counterpart GCHQ had intercepted communications from some outspoken anti-Vietnam war luminaries, including actress Jane Fonda. In fact, the Sedition Act of 1918 aimed to do precisely that; restrict free speech. It prohibited the use of “disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language about the US government and its armed forces, and was repealed in 1920, only two years after its enactment, because of its incompatibility with the First Amendment.

In the private sector, the demand for Southeast Asian studies as a form of knowledge and the demand for a potential employer who possesses that knowledge are both limited and rather specific. However, the number could increase depending on how large is the investment and production outfit a particular company has in Southeast Asia. Since some of the demand for the knowledge is rather short-term, often specific but detailed, therefore it has to be customized to the needs of a company, ‘think-tanks,’ or ‘consultant companies’ have often become the main supplier of such tailored knowledge. Many of such organizations are actually dependent on ‘freelance’ Southeast Asianists or academics who do such jobs on a part-time, unofficial basis. The proliferation of international migration in South and Southeast Asia has seen the emergence of a number of significant issues both in the countries of origin and destination as well as among the migrants themselves and their families.

Lake Baikal, which is 5,315 feet deep and whose bottom lies 3,822 feet below sea level, are all located in Asia. Those physiographic extremes and the overall predominance of mountain belts and plateaus are the result of the collision of tectonic plates. In geologic terms, Asia comprises several very ancient continental platforms and other blocks of land that merged over the eons. Most of those units had coalesced as a continental landmass by about 160 million years ago, when the core of the Indian subcontinent broke off from Africa and began drifting northeastward to collide with the southern flank of Asia about 50 million to 40 million years ago.

Southeast Asia is also a major producer of tropical fruits, such as mango, papaya, and pineapple. India is the world’s largest mango-producing nation, accounting for roughly 40 percent of total global output in 2010. The TAC stated that ASEAN political and security dialogue and cooperation should aim to promote regional peace and stability by enhancing regional resilience. Regional resilience shall be achieved by cooperating in all fields based on the principles of self-confidence, self-reliance, mutual respect, cooperation, and solidarity, which shall constitute the foundation for a strong and viable community of nations in Southeast Asia. These conjectures, however, are very difficult to evaluate empirically because the emergence and characteristics of family planning programs are correlated with other determinants of fertility decline, most notably socioeconomic development. ADB supports projects in developing member countries that create economic and development impact, delivered through both public and private sector operations, advisory services, and knowledge support. Prior to the proposal, Burma issued a Government statement on the Vietnam cease-fire showing that it was not necessarily negative toward regional cooperation in Southeast Asia, and this was carefully noted. The Vietnam cease-fire, in particular, is considered as harboring the great possibility of upsetting the balance among the great powers in Southeast Asia, thereby exerting an influence on the domestic affairs and diplomacy of the countries in that region. In the southeast of Asia there is the Malay Archipelago, a widely ramified island world that consists of many countries and reaches as far as Australia. Along the Pacific firing from Japan over the Philippines to Indonesia thousands of islands have a volcanic origin.

This is because migrants tend to be drawn from particular regions rather than randomly across the nation. Hence, remittances tend to be focused on particular parts of countries such as Kerala in India or Flores in Indonesia. Moreover, these regions are often among the poorest in the origin countries and the remittances represent one of the few sources of investment in those regions.
